Michigan Has Among the Highest Rate of Black Homicide Victims

When it comes to murder, all too often the focus is on the offender — and many zero in on his or her race.

But the Washington, D.C.-based Violence Policy Center turned that review on it head, looking at the race of homicide victims. For Michigan, the results are not encouraging.

The FBI says there were 625 murders in Michigan in 2009 – the year the study is considering – of those, 427 of the victims were black, according to the report “Black Homicide Victimization in the United States.”
