Tyrone Carter is a first-year master’s student at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs MSW program. He currently serves as a Care Coordinator at Union Station Homeless Services for his field placement. Additionally, Tyrone completed training as a Mental Health Coach for UCLA Depression Grand Challenge, Stand For All program.
Before his time at UCLA, Tyrone earned a B.A. in African Studies and Psychology from California State University, Northridge (CSUN) and published his first research article, “Educating the Newly Enslaved: Empowering African American Males While and Following Incarceration with Access to Higher Education.” While at CSUN, he served in several leadership roles, including Chair of Board of Directors University Student union. As chair, he promoted and actively advocated for the personal and intellectual welfare of CSUN students of all backgrounds to ensure that every student had an equitable opportunity to succeed. Tyrone graduated from CSUN with the honor of Outstanding Graduating Senior Award 2020 title.
Whether doing clinical work or advocacy, Tyrone has committed his life to improve the lives of those in his community and beyond moreover aid in structural societal change that will create a culture where everyone has an equal chance to thrive. His path to activism and academia was a long and winding road of addiction, recovery, and spiritual awakening.
